Red River is about a fifteen-year old Japanese girl named Yuri Suzuki, who is magically transported to Hattusa, the capital of the Hittite Empire in Anatolia. She was summoned by Queen Nakia who intends to use Yuri as a human sacrifice. Yuri's blood is the key element needed in placing a curse upon the princes of the land so that they will perish, leaving Nakia's son as the sole heir to the throne.
As the story progress, however, Yuri not only repeatedly manages to escape Nakia's scheming, she also becomes revered as a saint and incarnation of the goddess Ishtar, and falls in love with crown prince Kail.

If you are ever in the mood for old-school bring-you-to-tears-and-make-you-feel-all-fuzzy-inside shoujo, this is what you should read. Of course Red River has it's heart-wrenching moments-- don't make the mistake of thinking that this is all bunnies and rainbows. But it's those sad moments that make the happy scenes so beautiful and captivating, and together they create a breathtaking story.
Even those who are not a fan of old-style shoujo art should be pleased by the beautiful illustrations. And despite being 28 volumes long, at no point is the story dull.
Overview: Shoujo at its finest; you will not find a more heart-warming story.
