Kouga and Iga are two feuding ninja clans who attempt to make peace through an arranged marriage of their respective heirs. However, the peace plans fall apart when the rightful heir is disputed, leaving both clans to have internal battles between their ten greatest ninja; the last man standing would be declared as the rightful heir. As the attempt to make peace was destroyed, the two clans inevitably declared war even though no one was aware of why they should fight each other.
As each of the ten ninja from each clan falls destiny will eventually bring together or tear apart Gennosuke and Oboro, the original heirs to the Kouga and Iga clans.

I must say that this anime started out great. The twisted rivalry plot is one of the strong point of Basilisk. In each and every episode in the anime you will feel the curiosity and the tension in between the two sides. When it seems that one side finally has the upper hand, the other side will unexpectedly get back at them and gain the upper hand instead.. this goes on and on.. I really enjoy watching the first few episodes..

My impressions with this series are mixed and couldn't enjoy it very much. Tenzen is just the worst and I hate his character the most, his sins against Oboro and Kagero is one thing yet his stupid immortal no jutsu was the most annoying thing about him. I felt Koshiro was a disappointment in his character development in how he foolishly blamed Gennosuke for causing Oboro's pain and ignorant of the fact that it was all on Tenzen as the cause. On the Kouga side; the one I disliked on that side is Udono; he's a disgusting, crude womanizer, his ability is incredibly cartoonish and belongs in a shounen. I can understand the agony Oboro went through considering she's a gentle person, a pacifist by nature, and what Tenzen put her through. I'm glad she was able to find her resolve in her character development. The worst female character is Ofuku, I loathe her and she has nothing redeeming about her character. I hate the character design of Tokugawa Ieyasu, it's the worst animated depiction of him. The best character in this series for me is definitely Hyoma, he has the best head on his shoulders with his wisdom and level headed nature, plus he's a kind person. In other words, Hyoma's the best husbando material. Gennosuke and Oboro made a beautiful couple and what became of their dreams together is heartbreaking. I'm not interested in watching the sequel, it didn't need one IMO.

A timeless classic based on on excellent piece of classical literature - basically a Japanese Romeo & Juliet. My only real gripes are that some of the better supporting cast were woefully underutilized and/or developed, and a few key things were not satisfactorily explained. One of the few I have on blu-ray rather than "mere" DVD.

A very intriguing story, which kept me interested and hooked the entire time. To top this, the music added a new element all its own. While I did not like the opening and ending songs, I believe the musical compositions throughout the series proved fruitful and a breath that I held throughout the entire series.

I can actually make a 3 word summary for this anime. It would go like this : KILL, KILL, KILL.

Heartless killing, endless dying. That pretty much made up the story. Almost every character was just blood thirsty, all except this anime’s Romeo and Juliet, aka Gennosuke and Oboro. It’s another story of forbidden love, I suppose. The forbidden love was a foot note for me – I was more engrossed by the fight scenes and the dramatic deaths of the ninjas.

The concept was actually new to me, but I was able to understand most of it. I was familiar with Samurai – themed anime
however it is a good one!as expected from Gonzo studio!

My bad, I have seen the live action movie (called Shinobi) first so I was familiar with the plot on the start. But in the end things went differently and I like the anime more couse they didn't have to rush things like in the movie. There is a lot of action from the start, charas are dying one by one, the whole thing in kinda tragic and sad, have a lot gore and violence, but feelings too.
Well, absolutely my type, shame I haven't see it sooner. Superb show.

I saw some of the anime episode in local channel and I decided to save some money to buy the anime. I also got hooked on the manga.
So, my personal comment, I think the graphic was really beautiful, lots of beautiful manly guys and 'gentle' girls. I really love Masaki Segawa's drawing...XD
For the plot, I think we all should give Futaro Yamada some credits for it. It's intense and sad, not much humor left after Gennosuke found out about the killing.
I found that there's a lot of admirable characters in Kouga's clan than Iga's clan, thou I have a soft spot for Yashamaru from Iga, since he's the first character to appear in the series.

beautiful yet sad anime series. I found the artwork to be quite breathtaking, however how it ended was just evil. I enjoyed this series and have seen it twice now. thanks to television and their curiosity I'm able to have been able to watch quite a lot of anime on my own without even renting and/or buying it first.

Beauty can be deadly.
Basilisk is one of my favourite anime!
Not only it got awesome characters(only some weren't that cool) but the story was very interesting and great!
I'm not really a fan for the ending thou, it's heart-breaking. For once, I wish for a happy ending in an anime such as this.
But, it got high dose of violence and explicit nudity (the manga is worse. The nudity etc I mean.), and the only sane thing is Oboro and Gennosuke's feeling for each other.
But I still like it thou, this anime inspired me to draw a manga about ..something..and believe it or not, I draw more than 200 pages. xD But I stop for awhile, cause the story aren't so strong and I need to redo t. :B

Tragedy. That's the best word to describe this anime. Manipulation, betrayal, hypocresy and love are good words too, specially love.
The story has an underlying romance, something that gives us hope for a better ending, but turns everything else into a bath of blood, the characters are puppets of destiny and greed, and all just because a woman wanted his son to be a powerful man. Sometimes love is not enough. Good Ending, sad, but good.

Anime.
So I've "known" about this series for a few years. I'd see images of it or something, but there was this feeling I had that told me NOT TO WATCH IT. And being lazy, I obeyed it... till recently. After watching episode one, you can easily tell how this series is going to be and how it's going to end. *sigh* It's really, really good. The artwork is amazing and the series IS good. Just... depressing.
[Semi-Spoiler]
I cried at the end.

I really liked this series since I love samurais. But I also were expecting more romance. The ending was sad, mostly reminds me of Romeo & Juliet obviously. But overall, the art and animation were ok, the action scenes were alright too. Characters were awesome though, especially the main character. I recommend this anime for those who love romance, samurais and tragic endings.

The story takes place in the year 1614. Two ninja clans, Tsubagakure of the Iga and Manjidani of Kouga, battle each other to determine which grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu will become the next shogun. The deadly competition between 10 elite ninja from each clan unleashes a centuries-old hatred that threatens to destroy all hope for peace between them.

One of the best anime from GONZO. One of the best anime about shinobi. The tragic story tells of the bravery, sacrifice, treachery, lust for power, love and death. The latest series to watch without tears is impossible.
Anime very deep.
There is something to think about after watching.

not one of my favorites, the art is good, i'll admit, and the opening, just awesome. but the fight sequences
could improve, to me it was like they put the manga in motion and although it was a good story, there are many
episodes that were expendible. for the music i'd go with a 7, but in general i've seen much better when it comes to ninja stories.
