Blue Gender was 26 episodes of nothing but mess. I won't say the concept itself was bad, because it wasn't. The concept that Earth itself was cleansing itself of "a cancer" was a pretty good idea (not going to spoil much by explaining it), but it was applied to poorly written characters with one track minds. However I do say Yuji and Marlene had two tracks but they're extremes of each other. Yuji goes from cry baby to cold blooded psycho while Marlene does the opposite, going from cold blooded to cry baby. Why make two characters identical to each other but yet on the opposite of one another. True opposites attract but in this case it's like the North and South Pole trying to connect but fail in doing so.

This series is one of many reasons why the 90's produced the finest anime, although this series was made at the turn of the next decade for anime. Blue Gender is every sense of the word a true, adult-oriented anime with the overall setting, situations, and characters. It's a well-crafted series created for a late 90's series and has great detail on character facial expressions when showing his/her emotional state, such as anguish or fear. The only flaw I have to say is that the animation direction could've been more consistent. I loved how the series and the characters developed by the second half of the series, especially for series' leads Yuji Kaido and Marlene Angel in the ups and downs of their relationship together from the moment they met to when they fall in love with each other and eventually consummate their love. It's a shame this series is underrated, it deserves more love, for when it comes to mecha romance...this is one of the better ones as it feels endearing and real.

This was one of the first overly violent anime I had seen. Up until this point it was mostly things like Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Yuyu Hakusho and other similar shows that were early on brought over to the US. This was the first one that really made me see where the medium can be pushed. The show as a whole (from what I remember) wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. I thought the characters were a little dull and made some bad decisions and the ending was meh. But it was a decent ride.
