At 15, Chise sells herself into slavery as a last resort to find a place to call home, and is bought by the mage Elias Ainsworth as his apprentice and future wife. He reveals that she is a Sleigh Beggy, a human with the power of gathering and using large amounts of magic, at great cost to her own wellbeing and lifespan. In addition to this, she has the gift of sight, being able to see spirits normally invisible to humans, an ability which caused her great hardships as a child. Later on, she develops a friendship with the sorceress Alice while bonding over their troubled childhoods.
