Lockhart makes his first appearance in "The Chamber of Secrets" as the new professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Charming and always smiling, he relishes in his fame, is always eager to sign autographs and constantly brags about his
triumphs against dark magic.
It is revealed later on that he either made up or downright stole most of
the heroic deeds presented in his books, at which point he tries to erase Harry and Ron's memory using Ron's broken
wand. The spell backfires, though, and Lockhart ends up losing his memories instead. Harry and Ron meet him again in
"Order of the Phoenix" while visiting St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. While he seems to be very
slowly regaining his memory (and his desire to sign images of himself), Gilderoy still has no recollection of who Ron
and Harry are or of the fact that he used to teach at Hogwarts.
