Known as "The Boy Who Lived" within the wizard community, Harry finds out about his true past on his 11th birthday, when
Hagrid personally delivers Harry's acceptance letter and reveals the fact that Harry's parents had actually been
murdered by the Dark Wizard Voldemort. Harry was supposed to share their fate, but the Avada Kedavra curse mysteriously
rebounded and Voldemort was destroyed instead, leaving Harry the sole survivor of this curse. However, the first year at
Hogwarts proves that Voldemort is not completely dead, prompting multiple confrontations with Harry as the story
progresses.
On the Hogwarts Express, Harry meets Ron
Weasley and Hermione Granger, who become his closest friends, and
Draco Malfoy, a spoiled and rude pureblood who becomes his enemy. Harry's
life at Hogwarts soon becomes busy, with both school work and attempts on his life being a common occurrence. Harry's
defining physical features are the lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead — a remnant of the curse that killed his
parents — and the green eyes he inherited from his mother.
