I definitely feel this series is so much better than Shingeki no Kyojin, the key ingredient Kabaneri has at its' core that I feel makes it stand out and find endearing is that it has heart in the character relationships among the group that's quite strong. Also, the characters themselves are developed rather well and they have interesting qualities within them, especially Mumei. The main antagonist, Biba adds a new dimension to the series with his cold ambition and showing what a complete monster he is moreso than the Kabane. Mumei's characterization takes on new facets as the series grows as she is portrayed as quite a headstrong and fiery girl, but a vulnerable side is shown. I was sad when a good character was killed off, he was truly a strong character and felt he was better than the MC. The characters who surprised me the most were Ayame and Kurusu; I liked how Ayame developed as a strong leader for the group and how there's a sensitive side to Kurusu in regards to his feelings for Ayame. I think Kurusu and Ayame would make a cute couple. Another element Kabaneri has that I like is Haruhiko Mikimoto's character designs, his work is always a treat to see. I think the series could've had another episode near the end where it doesn't feel rushed. This anime is certainly my favorite of the Spring 2016 season and happy that a second season will air in 2018.
Koutetsujou no Cabaneri = Shingeki No Kyojin with trains! And Zombies! Ikuma is a decent main character but really thats it. Mumei isn't really a good character. She honestly stopped developing into a bearable character until her "brother" Biba showed up and made her a very ehhh character. The concept of Cabaneri sounds cool, half human and half zombie. But when they start shooting hyper beams and force fields, its just very cringe worthy. And Biba... the main villain. He such a waste of a character design. Omg, your dad left you for dead in a zombie apocalypse. Why? Because he feared you. (Don't worry, its not explained.) So what do you? You go, get a bunch of people, kill a bunch of people that had nothing to do with your dad's betrayal and tell them to follow you because they are weak. He went around killing people for no reason besides I'm mad at my dad. This show is better than Kyojin but it still isn't a gem. This show you could skip.
