In France, the musketeers were a branch of the French royalty's military, created in the 17th century and lasting until
the beginning of the 19th century. Initially mingling with the lower levels of society, they soon gained enough favor
with the French royalty to be appointed in more important positions. However, musketeers were not unique to France, and
appear in other countries (Sweden, Russia, Britain etc.) in varying uniforms.
In popular culture, the
most well-known uniform is inspired from some donned by the French musketeers, and is comprised of a large-brimmed hat
adorned with one or more feathers, a long cloak, and pants with bouffant legs. As for weapons, they are often seen
carrying a sword.
