Epic. *rolls* The best way I can think to describe it is like a magical girls anime turned shonen. Replace the
transformation sequences with lengthy summoning stock, change out the girls for a guy (interestingly, none of the
protagonist's friends get drawn into the story's magical-ness), and presto! There's even a little token
(the summon drive) that gets waved around to cue stock 'transformation' footage.
The art style would drive me batty if the anime weren't so ridiculously hokey in general. I sometimes find myself
making excuses as to why I'm even watching something so... XD [reason: I watch anime while editing images]. I
don't know if words can really describe. Some of the action gets so over-the-top that I end up feeling embarrassed
for the characters involved. '__'; It's like watching DBZ and seeing Goku get an
ultra-extra-super-duper-extra-super-reallyextrasuperduper new power-up. Beyond the ridiculous and all that. There's
a clear target audience (very young boys...they would think it's <i>awesome</i> XD ), but the series
has enough of a nostalgia-factor (ahh...remember when we all sat around watching Power Rangers and were totally
convinced that the Rangers were not in any way geeky? *sighs*) to keep older viewers watching.
The opening is surprisingly good--in a really hokey, gloriously Fail!tacular way. XD I don't mind sitting through
it much in the same way I don't mind sitting through the opening of ThunderCats. *rolls* It's just so... XD
Two things to warn about:
1. The girls are <i>deathly</i> annoying. To the point at which I've yet to see an episode streaming
without comments about how all the girls should be tossed off a cliff. Or something. They really just need to die and
I'm clearly not the only one out there thinking it.
2. Much like He Man, Onmyou Taisenki is <s>debatably</s> accidentally very, very gay. XD Mind, I don't
mean this in a negative way, but in an 'oh, look, there are more shonen-ai undertones than y'see in most light
shonen-ai anime'-type way. Again, something many a person has commented on. It's the sort of thing you can
easily chalk up to hardcore friendship (uhm...male protagonists holding hands while flying through a field of rainbows
in the opening notwithstanding... *rolls*), or ship. Still, it's difficult enough to miss that hardcore homophobes
should be warned. ^___^; *laughs*
On a totally random note, the character designs for all the summons are fan-friggin'-tastic in their uniqueness.
