A period piece set in Kyoto during the twilight of the Edo period, Peacemaker Kurogane tells the story of a boy, Ichimura Tetsunosuke, who joins the Shinsengumi in order to avenge the deaths of his parents at the hands of an influential Choshu
clansman, Yoshida Toshimaro.
There, he learns that if he is
to taste revenge, he will have to cast aside his humanity and become a demon in spirit;
this is thus the tale of
a boy forced by the circumstances of his time to grow up and embrace his destiny.

One, it was funny.
Two, it was touching.
Three -- just. Ouch.
All in all, it was very entertaining.

I liked this anime centered around the Shinsengumi; although some events stretch actual history, the series kept true of the strength of the Shinsengumi as samurai. The blend of comedy and drama and both were well balanced in this series. However, I didn't like the OP & ED songs...they didn't really suit this series that much, the songs sounded like they belonged on Gintama.
Absolutely love it, Characters reactions and feelings seem so natural... and all this realism and basing on history (SO my type)... made me laugh and cry a lot. Most of the chars are historical (I suppose only Ayu-nee and Suzu are not) and you can learn a lot about them here, cause Chrono Nanae is using historical facts here and stick with them. For example, Souji is playing with kids from neighborhood, or Isami Kondou can put his whole hand into his mouth (there's a rumour he really could do that). But what I really like is development of Yamazaki Susumu. Make me hate him (he is really annoing at first), then understand him, so finaly he could make it to my fav characters is really something... I wish they do anime continuation, couse manga is getting interesting later^_^
I might be biased on this one because of it's setting
I'm a total sucker for anime/mangas with the setting in the past
and I just love shinsengumi characters xDD
I think this does give some knowledge on shinsengumi and stuff though.
I do recommend this xD
I watched this again after taking a break from the train wreck that is Hekketsu Roku. Nanae Chrono's art is just as breathtaking as Hakuoki's but it didn't need enough fanservice to get viewers to like it...
I own the entire ADV released DVD collection as well as the imported version of the anime and (I'm currently partial on the TP release of this) manga. It's an excellent series and although the anime is a mix of both Shinsengumi Imon and Peacemaker Kurogane, it's very well done nonetheless. I laughed and cried while still enjoying a large number of the characters.
