Rabbit in the Moon Theme
Tagged under Fairy Tales.
The Rabbit in the Moon is a character popular in East Asian folklore and Aztec mythology. The markings on the Moon are
likened to the shape of a rabbit who is either making the elixir of life (in Chinese folklore), or ingredients for rice
cake (in Japanese and Korean folklore). In Aztec lore, the god Quetzalcoatl draws the image of the rabbit on the Moon as
a means of thanks, after the rabbit offers him food.
Usagi
Tsukino's name and appearance are a pun on this legend: her name means exactly "Rabbit of the Moon" (Tsuki no Usagi,
月のうさぎ) and her two hair buns allude to a rabbit's ears (Chibi
Usa's even more so).
