For Gainax's first anime, it's a beautiful visual achievement in the background detail for an 80's feature movie and the brilliant music score by Ryuichi Sakamoto is another key feature that showcases how spectacular The Wings of Honneamise is. It's also a quite unique story in the overall setting as it tells the journey of Shirotsugu in his people's quest to the stars as the first man in space with the encouragement of the people he is closest to in his life, such as his comrade Matti and lady love, Riquinni. The conflict in the story is between the opposing nation on Shirotsugu's world referred to as the Republic who attempt to sabotage the launch and provoke the Kingdom of Honneamise into a full blown war and Shirotsugu is determined to make this launch into space a success. It's a great film to see as it has a great message within that no matter what obstacles and hardships may come, to never give up and reach for your goals. In that respect, I see Honneamise as an inspirational movie. The only flaw I see in this movie is that scene where Shirotsugu forces himself on Riquinni, that scene was rather distasteful and takes away from Shirotsugu's character development.
