This movie was well packaged, but the box, when opened was completely empty. Again, this review is for people who have read and love Ursula Le Guinn's original writing. I was so aghast throughout the movie, I couldn't remain truly objective. The story ruined it all for me. If I never read the original books, I might have thought this was an enjoyable story, but as a tribute to the Earthsea books, it was completely botched. There is no depth to the characters, no idea why they are driven to do the things they do, and no idea how they are strung together. I grew up loving Gibli studio, and still love their movies. I dare say I love them better than Disney movies because they are more complex and have more depth. Young and adult viewers enjoy these movies. That is, until this one.

I know a little about the books, but I never actually read them. When I realised that there was this movie directed by Goro (Miyazaki-sensei's son) I thought: "Hey! This has to be awesome!". I saw it and... I didn't like it that much. The art is absolutely gorgeous, like eveything that Ghibli does, but I was a little bit dissapointed with the plot: it's good enough, but the adaptation (or maybe the story itself, I don't know) lacks with passion and depth that characterizes every Miyazaki's stories.
The plot is confusing though the story looked nice, if being developed better. The only things I appreciated where the
settings (in Miyazaki's style).
SPARROW HAWK: "Now listen to me, Arren: no man nor any living thing in this world preserves their life forever. But
only to men is it given to know that we must die, and that is a precious gift. This life that is both our torment and
our treasure was never meant to endure for eternity. Life is a wave on the sea. Would you force the sea to grow still to
save one wave? To save yourself?"
I really liked this movie, it was the first one from ghibli in a long time that had the same feel as Princess Mononoke with same diversity in the plot. I highly recommend those who liked Princess Mononoke to watch this one. I loved it.
I found a Studio Ghibli film, which I liked less than others - and the matter is not history as such and not in the artistic embodiment. I'm just familiar with the original, I love these stories - and I'm a little sad that the creators removed so much attention from the Hawk (the main character in the books) to the Prince. Character Tenar almost not revealed and untouched topic search itself, the importance of names, the history of the dragon nation, the differences between male and female magic. In general, the story could be deeper and more interesting
This was not a bad movie, however I guess other Studio Ghibli films, like Princess Mononoke, have spoiled me. Animation was average, nothing wrong, yet nothing amazing about it either. The dub I listened to was good translation wise, however sub-par in the voice acting. The plot was ok, however similar to Spirited Away in that ***SPOILER ALERT*** the main Character's love interest is a dragon, and that it follows the basic 'hero has an internal battle that he must conquer before he can face his external battles' (haven't seen that plot line in forever... if you define forever as yesterday) ***END SPOILER ALERT***. Also there were many questions that were left unanswered, such as ***SPOILER ALERT*** why did Arren (our wonderful main character) kill his father? That was later answered with he has 'mental' problems, which raised another question; Why does he have mental problems? Answered later with, because he 'fears death'... umm... so why exactly did he kill his father again? It's not like he had anything to gain from it, and fearing death is not a reason to kill somebody, as it doesn't even make logical sense. ***END SPOILER ALERT***
