In anime, Valentine's Day is most often depicted as a holiday that requires lots of previous preparation. Girls will
often bake sweets—since homemade sweets require more skill and effort than buying them from a store—for the person
they're in love with. The act of giving their crushes the sweets can also be interpreted as a love confession.
While girls can give out sweets to multiple people, they're more often than not reserved for the one they
love.
Note that in Japan; Honmei-choco
(本命チョコ, "true feeling chocolate") are given to whom they have romantic feelings for, and Giri-choco (義理チョコ, "obligation chocolate") are given to
co-workers, casual acquaintances, and others whom they have no romantic attachment to. Boys are expected to return gifts
on White Day if they receives chocolates from girls, sometimes two
or three times the worth of the Valentine's gift.
