Ikebana (生け花, "living flowers") is the Japanese art of arranging flowers. It is currently taught in over 1,000 specialized schools, each providing its own particular style. Ikebana is closely tied to the concept of hanakotoba (花言葉), in which each flower is assigned a specific meaning—on its own as well as along other flowers—according to its color, shape, length, number in the bouquet etc. For example, red flowers are brought to funerals and resemble fire and, as such, are seen as undesirable; a bouquet should also have an odd number of flower stalks, as an even number is offered to the dead.
