Ruth Character

Ruth first meets Chise in the local church graveyard, after saving her from a malevolent spirit. Initially a church grim - a large dog who chases away grave robbers and evil spirits -, he becomes Chise's familiar and accepts his new name "Ruth" from her. Afterwards, he is mostly seen in dog form, but can assume human form when necessary. Ruth is very protective of Chise, whom he shares a strong mental link with, and sees himself as her older brother.
