Yuki-Onna Theme
Tagged under Youkai, Japanese Terms.
In Japanese folkore, the Yuki-onna is a vengeful spirit with the appearance of a very beautiful young woman. Because she
appears during snowstorms, it is thought she perished during one. In older tales, Yuki-onna appeared in front of
travelers who got lost during snowstorms, draining their life force or deliberately leading them down wrong paths, to
their inevitable death. She is sometimes pictured holding a child to lure well-intentioned victims, and may attack
people in their own homes (though she may need to be invited inside first).
In more recent variations,
however, the Yuki-onna's evil side has been downplayed in favor of a more sympathetic approach, with her being regarded
as a victim or occasionally displaying benevolent behavior, even going so far as to help lost people.
