Snow White Theme

In most versions of the story, Snow White is born after her mother, the Queen, wishes for a child and pricks her finger on a needle, causing three drops of blood to fall on the fresh snow. After the Queen dies in childbirth, the King remarries; the new Queen soon grows to despise Snow White's beauty and orders the castle huntsman to kill her. However, the huntsman takes pity on the girl and urges her to run away, lying that he had killed her.

After wandering through the forest for a while, Snow White comes across the cottage of the Seven Dwarfs, who agree to provide her with shelter in exchange for her doing the housework. Things are quiet for a while, until the Queen finds out that Snow White is still alive and sets out to kill her. While the Disney version features only the poisoned apple, the Grimm version features two additional attempts to end Snow White's life: a poisoned comb that stings her head and puts her to sleep, and a very tight corset that renders her unable to breathe, causing her to faint (in the latter two, the dwarfs rescue her in time).

After a bite of the poisoned apple gets lodged in her throat, Snow White falls into a death-like sleep. In the Disney version, the spell is broken when Snow White is kissed by the prince, and the evil Queen falls off a cliff to her death. In the Brothers Grimm version, the prince convinces the dwarfs to entrust the "dead" Snow White to him. While the coffin is being transported to his castle, the piece of apple is dislodged from Snow White's throat and she awakes. At Snow White's wedding, the evil Queen is forced to dance in hot iron shoes until she collapses and dies.
